Obama Condemns Violence After Charlie Kirk’s Tragic Death

Former President Barack Obama expressed sorrow over the killing of 31-year-old conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, calling the act “horrific and a tragedy” while criticizing the political climate that allowed such violence to occur. Speaking at the Jefferson Educational Society’s global summit, Obama stated he did not know Kirk personally but acknowledged the loss of a young man with two children and a wife. He emphasized that while he disagreed with many of Kirk’s ideas, the shooting had no place in democracy.

Obama’s remarks followed his earlier social media post condemning the assassination, in which he urged prayers for Kirk’s family. The former president also criticized rhetoric from political figures, referencing past leaders who prioritized unity during tense moments. His comments came amid growing concerns over escalating polarization in U.S. politics.
Kirk was shot and killed while speaking at Utah Valley University on September 10. No suspects have been identified in the case.
