Florida Lt. Gov. Jay Collins Considers Gubernatorial Bid Amid GOP Primary Tensions

Florida Lt. Gov. Jay Collins is reportedly weighing a run for governor as the Republican primary field intensifies, with potential implications for the state’s political landscape. Collins, a former state senator and Green Beret, has hinted at exploring the race, though no official announcement has been made.

Collins, a close ally of term-limited Gov. Ron DeSantis, mentioned the possibility of selecting Casey DeSantis, the governor’s wife, as his running mate. “Casey is an absolute rock star,” Collins said, praising her role as first lady. However, he emphasized that his current focus remains on his lieutenant governor duties.

DeSantis appointed Collins to the second-highest state office last month after Jeanette Nuñez stepped down. The governor has praised Collins’ leadership, calling him the “Chuck Norris of Florida politics” in reference to the action-movie actor. Collins, a decorated Army Special Forces veteran who continued service after losing a leg, has framed his potential bid as a continuation of DeSantis’ policies.

Collins told POLITICO this week that he is “getting really close” to deciding whether to enter the race, noting his family’s support. He stated, “If I jump in, it’s because I believe my approach is what’s best for the state of Florida.” However, he stressed the need for careful consideration before committing.

The potential contest could include Rep. Byron Donalds, a Trump-endorsed candidate who has raised over $26 million. Collins has indicated he would consult his family before finalizing any decision, aiming to avoid impulsive moves. “We’ve thought about it, we’ve prayed about it,” he said. “We’re comfortable with however this turns out.”

Collins’ possible candidacy adds another layer of complexity to the GOP primary, where candidates are vying to succeed DeSantis as the state’s leader.
