Pittsburgh Steelers Backup Quarterback Mugged in Dublin Ahead of International NFL Game

The Pittsburgh Steelers confirmed backup quarterback Skylar Thompson was robbed Friday night in Dublin ahead of the team’s game against the Minnesota Vikings in the Irish capital. Thompson suffered minor injuries during the incident.

Sunday’s matchup marks the NFL’s first regular season game held in Ireland. The 28-year-old had already been placed on injured reserve after sustaining a hamstring injury on Sept. 10. A Steelers spokesman stated, “We are aware of a situation involving Skylar Thompson on Friday night in Dublin,” and added the team would provide no further comment as they collaborated with NFL security to investigate.

Thompson, a Kansas State product, has played 10 games over three seasons in the NFL, all with the Dolphins. He started a 2022 playoff game for Miami, throwing for 220 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions in a loss at Buffalo.

The Steelers and Vikings are set to face off Sunday morning in the NFL’s inaugural Dublin game as part of an expanded international schedule. Irish media reported Thompson had been assaulted and robbed in Dublin. Earlier reports indicated he was “OK” following the incident.

Signing with Pittsburgh this past January on a Reserve/Future contract, Thompson earned his spot on the Steelers’ roster with strong preseason performance before being placed on IR after Pittsburgh’s Week 1 win over the New York Jets. He celebrated the team’s victory alongside teammates in Dublin, offering a small silver lining to an otherwise troubling situation.
