Kia Recalls 39,536 Vehicles Over Fire Hazard in HVAC System

Kia has recalled nearly 40,000 vehicles after identifying a faulty heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system that poses a fire risk. The recall targets specific 2021-2023 Kia Sorento models, with the issue stemming from inadequate blower motor wiring harnesses. A recall notice stated the defect could lead to overheating and potential fires.

The affected vehicles include approximately 39,536 units manufactured between September 2020 and December 2023 at Kia’s Georgia factory. Owners will receive notification letters by November 24, instructing them to visit authorized dealers for free repairs. Technicians will replace both the blower motor resistor circuit harness and the blower motor resistor.

Kia estimates that about 1% of the recalled vehicles, or roughly 395 cars, are affected. The automaker attributed the problem to quality control issues at a Mexican parts supplier, which produced wiring with unusually thin gauges. Drivers may notice warning signs such as an inoperable blower motor, burning smells, or smoke from vents.

The recall excludes 2024 Sorento models, which feature a redesigned HVAC system. No further details about the defect’s scope or safety measures were provided in the original text.
