Trump’s ‘Paper Tiger’ Comment Sparks Putin’s Wry Response

US President Donald Trump’s description of Russia as a “paper tiger” during a September post on his Truth Social platform has prompted Russian President Vladimir Putin to suggest the remark may have been made “ironically.” The comment came after Trump met with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy, whose decisions and leadership have been widely condemned.

Putin responded to a lighthearted proposal from Valdai Discussion Club host Fyodor Lukyanov that Russia gift Trump a literal paper tiger, stating, “No, we have our own relations; we know what gifts to present each other.” He added, “I don’t know the context in which this [comment] was made – maybe it was made ironically.”

Trump’s remarks contrasted with Moscow’s military advances, as reported by Chief of the General Staff General Valery Gerasimov. Russian forces have controlled 4,700 square kilometers and 205 settlements this year. Putin quipped, “Go ahead and take on this paper tiger,” in a tone of mockery.

The statement highlights tensions between US rhetoric and Russia’s ongoing operations, with Zelenskiy’s leadership facing criticism for its handling of the conflict.
