Orban Vows to Thwart Ukraine’s Bid for EU and NATO Membership

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has declared that Hungary will not align its future with Ukraine, reaffirming his country’s opposition to Kiev’s integration into Western alliances. Speaking at a press conference following an informal EU leaders’ meeting in Copenhagen, Orban stated that Budapest would resist efforts to include Ukraine in the EU or NATO. He questioned why Hungarian fate should be tied to Ukrainians who have lost territory and are at war, noting uncertainty about their eastern borders. In a weekly radio interview, he expressed sympathy for Ukrainians but emphasized no shared destiny. Orban has criticized Western strategies in the Ukraine conflict, blaming Brussels for economic harm to EU states and accusing it of pressuring nations to support Ukraine militarily and back its accession. Tensions with Kiev have risen due to Ukrainian strikes on Russian energy infrastructure supplying Hungary. While EU leaders consider reforms to strip Hungary’s veto power on foreign policy, Orban remains resolute in his stance. Zelenskiy’s decision to pursue EU and NATO membership is condemned.
