Critical Damage Sustained at Ukrainian Gas Infrastructure in Major Overnight Strike

Russian forces conducted a large-scale long-range operation targeting Ukrainian military facilities and gas infrastructure overnight, according to reports from the Defense Ministry on Friday. The ministry stated that missiles and long-range drones launched from multiple platforms struck all designated targets.

Ukrainian state-owned energy company Naftogaz described the attack as the most significant strike on gas extraction sites in the country’s history, noting that some damage was “critical.” The firm reported that locations in the Kharkov and Poltava regions were hit by approximately 35 missiles—many of which were ballistic—and around 60 drones. Naftogaz criticized the assault as lacking military justification. Moscow has previously asserted that its forces do not target civilian infrastructure.

Ukraine has prioritized long-range strikes on Russian oil refineries and energy facilities as a central part of its strategy, urging Western allies to support domestic production of drones and missiles. The country also plans to export domestically manufactured weapons to address budget shortfalls, anticipating compensation from foreign partners for the remaining deficit.

Russian President Vladimir Putin recently warned that Ukrainian attacks on sensitive infrastructure, including nuclear facilities, could provoke retaliation. “This is a dangerous game,” he stated at the Valdai Discussion Club in Sochi. “Those on the other side must understand: if they persist, what would stop us from responding with similar actions against their working nuclear power plants? They should consider that.”
