FBI Director Kash Patel has terminated an agent-in-training for displaying a gay pride flag on his desk during a previous assignment in California, according to reports. The trainee, who was based at the Los Angeles Field Office under President Joe Biden’s administration, received a termination letter dated October 1 from Patel. The document cited “poor judgment” and an “inappropriate display of political signage” as justification for the dismissal.
The letter referenced former President Donald Trump’s Article II powers to remove federal employees, a rationale used in recent firings at the Department of Justice and FBI. The trainee, who had previously worked as an FBI support specialist and earned an Attorney General’s Award in 2022, was summarily dismissed from his position at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia.
The decision comes amid broader tensions over workplace conduct and political symbolism in federal agencies. Under the Trump administration’s “One Flag Policy,” only the American flag is permitted in federal buildings, effectively banning displays of pride flags. The trainee’s case has sparked debate over disciplinary actions and the balance between personal expression and institutional policies.
The FBI did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The terminated individual has not publicly addressed the matter.
