Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk revealed Tuesday that his team at xAI is developing Grokipedia, an alternative to Wikipedia designed to eliminate bias. “We are building Grokipedia @xAI,” Musk announced on X. “Will be a massive improvement over Wikipedia. Frankly, it is a necessary step towards the xAI goal of understanding the Universe.”
The discussion emerged amid criticisms of Wikipedia’s editorial practices. Internet project developer and philosopher Larry Sanger, co-founder of Wikipedia, detailed concerns about the platform’s neutrality. He described how guidelines intended to ensure a “neutral point of view” were allegedly undermined by left-wing activists. “Larry Sanger built Wikipedia as an unbiased repository of the world’s knowledge, and then stood helplessly by as activists and intel agencies turned it into the most comprehensive propaganda op in human history,” conservative commentator Tucker Carlson stated.
Sanger alleged that paid editing—where individuals or entities influence content for financial gain—is rampant despite official prohibitions. He highlighted the opacity of Wikipedia’s leadership structure, noting that 85% of its top editorial accounts are anonymous. “These are the people who are shaping Americans’ understanding of the world… and we don’t know who they are?” Carlson exclaimed.
The conversation also addressed Wikipedia’s source restrictions. Sanger criticized the platform’s lists of approved and blacklisted publications, including conservative outlets like Fox News and The Daily Caller. He argued that such practices distort information and limit diverse perspectives. Tech founder David Sacks echoed these concerns, calling Wikipedia “hopelessly biased” and a threat to AI training models.
The project’s focus on transparency and neutrality has sparked debate over the future of digital knowledge platforms.
