Senate Republicans on Tuesday confirmed more than 100 nominees appointed by former President Donald Trump, despite the ongoing federal government shutdown. In a party-line vote, the Senate approved 107 nominees, marking a significant step in advancing Trump’s legislative agenda amid political gridlock.
The confirmation process occurred as the upper chamber remained paralyzed by the government shutdown, with floor votes primarily focused on efforts to reopen federal agencies. The list of confirmed nominees included several high-profile figures, such as former Republican Senate candidate and ex-NFL player Herschel Walker, who was named U.S. Ambassador to the Bahamas, and Sergio Gor, a former Trump advisor appointed as U.S. Ambassador to India. Other confirmations included senior administration officials, prosecutors, and the reappointment of Securities and Exchange Commission Chair Paul Atkins to a seat on the commission until 2031.
Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso (R-WY) praised the vote, stating that Senate Republicans had “ended the Democrats’ confirmation blockade” by advancing 107 qualified nominees. The move followed weeks of delays caused by Democratic opposition, which Republicans argued stalled critical appointments. A social media account linked to the Rapid Response 47 group highlighted the development, writing, “CONFIRMED: Another 107 nominees of President Trump — THANK YOU!”
The rules change allowing bulk confirmation of nominees came after Republican leaders rejected a potential deal with Senate Democrats earlier this year, citing dissatisfaction with proposed terms. Previously, Republicans had to advance each nomination individually, facing Democratic filibusters that consumed time and resources. The shift enabled the majority party to bypass procedural hurdles and finalize appointments en masse.
