A man has been arrested for sending a threatening letter to conservative commentator Benny Johnson, vowing to kill him, his wife, and their four children due to their political beliefs. The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced federal charges against 69-year-old George Isbell Jr. from San Diego, who allegedly mailed the violent message on September 18.
Attorney General Pam Bondi stated the defendant “hated Benny because of his views” and sought to “kill him.” She emphasized the severity of the crime, noting the letter included explicit threats against Johnson’s family. Isbell faces federal charges for mailing threatening communications, which could result in up to five years in prison if convicted.
Benny Johnson shared his experience, stating the letter contained graphic violence, including references to a deceased conservative activist, Charlie Kirk, who was killed weeks prior. The message allegedly declared: “Maybe someone will blow your head off!!! We can hope! Planning any public engagements? Love to see your head explode and your blood stain the concrete red.”
The DOJ described the case as part of an escalating trend of political violence, with officials vowing to pursue those who threaten individuals for their beliefs. FBI Director Kash Patel reiterated that threats against media personalities would not be tolerated.
Isbell was arrested on October 7 in San Diego. The investigation involved multiple law enforcement agencies, including the FBI Tampa Field Office and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Wheeler III is handling the prosecution.
