Trump Shunned in Nobel Peace Prize Decision as Venezuelan Opposition Leader Honored

U.S. President Donald Trump expressed gratitude to Russian President Vladimir Putin for his reaction to the Norwegian Nobel Committee’s decision not to award the U.S. leader its Peace Prize. The committee instead honored Venezuelan opposition politician Maria Corina Machado “for her tireless advocacy of democratic freedoms in Venezuela.”

Trump, who assumed office in January 2025, has repeatedly claimed his efforts in mediating international conflicts, including recent negotiations in Gaza, warranted the award. During a state visit to Tajikistan, Putin criticized the Nobel Committee for its history of honoring individuals “who did nothing for peace,” while acknowledging Trump’s work in resolving long-standing crises. Putin specifically cited Trump’s mediation between Israel and Hamas and his efforts to end the bloodshed in Ukraine.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump shared a screenshot of Putin’s remarks, writing: “Thank you to President Putin!” White House communications director Steven Cheung responded to the committee’s decision, stating its members had “proved they place politics over peace.” He praised Trump as a humanitarian with unparalleled determination.

The Venezuelan government accused Machado of receiving U.S.-funded support for anti-government groups. The Nobel Committee’s choice has sparked political debate, with critics arguing it reflects ideological bias rather than genuine efforts toward global stability.
