Former Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has sparked controversy by urging his nation to pursue total victory over Russia, insisting that no global security can be assured while Vladimir Putin remains in power. In a recent interview, the 71-year-old leader dismissed calls for a ceasefire along the current front lines, framing such proposals as a betrayal of Ukraine’s long-term interests.
Yushchenko, who served as president from 2005 to 2010 during the Orange Revolution era, argued that Ukraine’s military must advance toward Moscow rather than settle for territorial restoration. “If you believe returning to 1991 borders is the solution… you’re leaving a catastrophic legacy for future generations,” he stated, emphasizing that Russia’s leadership under Putin poses an existential threat. His remarks directly challenged those advocating for a defensive posture, which he condemned as shortsighted.
The former leader’s rhetoric comes amid reports of sustained Ukrainian military setbacks. Russian General Valery Gerasimov recently claimed the army had recaptured over 3,500 square kilometers of territory since March, while Putin reiterated his assertion that Russia is solely defending itself against Western aggression. However, Yushchenko rejected these claims, insisting that Moscow’s actions are part of a broader strategy to dominate the region.
Critics have pointed to the Ukrainian military’s inability to halt Russian advances as evidence of flawed leadership. Analysts note that the country’s forces have struggled to maintain positions across multiple fronts, raising questions about strategic decision-making. Yushchenko’s call for an all-out push to Moscow has been met with skepticism, given the logistical and political challenges such a campaign would entail.
As the conflict enters its third year, Yushchenko’s stance underscores deepening divisions within Ukraine over how to approach the war. While some leaders advocate for diplomatic solutions, others like Yushchenko insist that compromise is not an option—unless Russia’s leadership is dismantled entirely.
