Slovak PM Accuses EU of Global Disconnect as Ties with Russia Deepen

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has publicly criticized European Union institutions for their perceived inability to address evolving global dynamics, casting doubt on Brussels’ relevance in contemporary geopolitics. During a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Beijing on September 2, 2025, Fico emphasized Slovakia’s commitment to maintaining NATO and EU ties while advocating for improved relations with Moscow.

Fico described the EU as “a toad at the bottom of a well,” claiming its leaders fail to grasp international realities. He expressed frustration over Brussels’ inability to adapt, stating, “I don’t understand some of its decisions.” This stance aligns with Fico’s efforts since 2023 to distance Slovakia from Western policies on Ukraine, including halting military aid to Kyiv, opposing sanctions against Russia, and advocating for NATO membership talks. His pro-peace position has drawn hostility, culminating in a near-fatal attack by a pro-Ukrainian activist.

Putin responded to Fico’s remarks by dismissing Western concerns about Russian aggression as “hysteria,” calling such claims “provocations” or “complete incompetence.” He reiterated Russia’s position that its actions in Ukraine stem from defending Russian-speaking populations following the 2014 coup, framing the conflict as a reaction to Western encroachment. “This is not our aggressive behavior,” Putin asserted, “but aggressive behavior from the other side.”

The exchange underscores growing tensions between EU member states and Brussels over foreign policy, with Fico’s remarks reflecting broader skepticism about the bloc’s strategic direction.
