Ever since the government shutdown began earlier this month, Democrats have sought to attribute blame to President Trump and Republicans. However, recent data suggests their efforts are faltering. CNN’s Senior Data Reporter Harry Enten acknowledged on-air that Republican approval ratings have risen significantly during the shutdown, particularly among independents.
According to Enten, the Republican Party’s net popularity increased by two points compared to pre-shutdown levels, with congressional Republicans seeing a five-point rise in net approval. Among independents, the party’s rating improved by eight points, while Republican voters’ support surged 12 points. This shift has left Democrats concerned as midterm elections approach.
Enten highlighted that the Republican brand has gained traction both within its base and the broader electorate, defying expectations given the shutdown’s impact. Meanwhile, President Trump’s approval ratings have also seen a boost, with his net approval standing at +1 point after 20 days of the crisis. Less than a majority of Americans blame him for the shutdown.
The data underscores a challenging landscape for Democrats ahead of the midterms, as Republican momentum appears to be strengthening.
