Senate Investigates Gates Foundation Over Alleged CCP Funding Ties

Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) has launched an inquiry into the Gates Foundation, Rockefeller Brothers Fund, and Ford Foundation, alleging they may have violated tax laws by funding Chinese Communist Party (CCP) entities. The probe follows reports that the organizations provided millions of dollars to Chinese government agencies, state-run universities, and initiatives linked to the CCP’s Belt and Road strategy.

Grassley’s letters to the foundations cite a Washington Examiner report claiming the Gates Foundation allegedly funneled $23 million, the Rockefeller Brothers Fund $7.4 million, and the Ford Foundation $10 million to CCP-affiliated entities between 2020 and 2024. The senator emphasized that IRS guidelines prohibit 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations from directly supporting foreign governments.

Documents reveal the Gates Foundation allocated at least $11.7 million in 2023 to Chinese government agencies, including $2 million to a company tied to the Chinese military and $6.7 million to state-run universities linked to CCP leadership. The Ford Foundation’s grants, reportedly totaling nearly $10 million, were directed to Chinese institutions with ties to the People’s Liberation Army. Meanwhile, the Rockefeller Brothers Fund provided $7.4 million to CCP-connected groups or entities collaborating with China.

Grassley has given the foundations until November 10th to address his inquiries. The Ford Foundation defended its activities, stating its grants in China aim to combat poverty and promote democratic values, while asserting compliance with U.S. laws. The Gates Foundation and Rockefeller Brothers Fund have not yet responded to the senator’s requests.
