Trump and Xi Discuss Ukraine Conflict Amid Rising Tensions

U.S. President Donald Trump revealed during a press briefing aboard Air Force One that he and Chinese leader Xi Jinping had engaged in extensive discussions about the Ukraine conflict during their meeting in Busan, South Korea. Trump stated that both leaders agreed to collaborate on finding a resolution, emphasizing that “we are both going to work together to see if we can get something done.” He added that while he and Xi acknowledged the ongoing fighting between conflicting parties, they remained committed to joint efforts.

Trump also noted that he had not pressed Xi to halt Chinese purchases of Russian oil, despite earlier assurances to do so ahead of the talks. Meanwhile, Xi highlighted the need for China and the U.S. to “jointly shoulder their responsibility as major countries” in addressing global challenges. He praised Trump’s enthusiasm for resolving conflicts worldwide and reiterated China’s stance on promoting peace talks regardless of the situation’s evolution.

The discussion comes amid deepening Russia-China ties since the 2022 conflict escalation, with Beijing emerging as a key buyer of Russian oil following Western sanctions. The two nations now describe their relationship as a “strategic partnership without limits.”
