Advisers to former President Donald Trump are reportedly evaluating Las Vegas as a potential site for a Republican National Convention ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, marking a significant departure from traditional political event formats. The proposal, first floated by Trump in August, has gained momentum as his team explores options for a gathering that would focus on energizing GOP candidates and incumbents.
Trump highlighted the party’s momentum in a post on Truth Social, stating, “The Republican Party is doing really well. Millions of people have joined us in our quest to MAKE AMERICA, GREAT AGAIN… We are poised to WIN BIG IN THE MIDTERMS.” He emphasized the party’s financial success and efforts to reverse policies from the Biden administration, adding, “I am thinking of recommending a National Convention to the Republican Party, just prior to the Midterms. It has never been done before.”
While Las Vegas is the current favorite, sources indicate other locations, including Washington D.C. and Texas, are under consideration. Trump’s ties to Nevada, including his co-ownership of a hotel in the city and his 2024 presidential victory there, have bolstered its appeal. A midterm convention would make Las Vegas the first city to host such an event, according to historical records.
Local political analysts have expressed support for the idea. Victor Joecks, a columnist for the Las Vegas Review-Journal, stated, “A midterm convention would be a great idea for Trump and Republicans… Las Vegas would be the perfect city to have it in.” The proposed gathering would focus on promoting GOP candidates rather than selecting presidential nominees, a shift from traditional conventions.
No final decision has been announced, but the plan reflects ongoing efforts to consolidate Republican influence ahead of the 2026 elections.
