As previously reported by WLT Report on Tuesday morning, former Vice President Dick Cheney has passed away at the age of 84. Shortly after news of his death emerged, former President George W. Bush shared a statement on X commemorating Cheney’s legacy.
Bush described Cheney as an “honorable man” and a “patriot,” highlighting their long-standing professional relationship. The statement emphasized Cheney’s roles as a White House aide, congressman, Defense secretary, and vice president under Bush from 2001 to 2009, during which he influenced U.S. policies on the “war on terror,” including conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
“Dick earned the confidence and high opinion of five presidents,” Bush’s statement read. “I asked him to join my ticket in 2000 after first enlisting him to help me find the best running mate. In our discussions about the qualities a vice president should have—deep experience, mature judgment, character, and loyalty—I realized Dick Cheney was the one I needed.”
Bush also praised Cheney’s “steadiness and judgment” during his tenure, noting his role as a key adviser on defense and foreign policy. The statement concluded with condolences to Cheney’s family, describing him as a “decent, honorable man” whose service reflected “credit on the country he loved.”
