Trump Announces Meeting with New York Mayor-Elect Zohran Mamdani, Promises “Work Something Out”

President Trump revealed plans to meet with New York City’s mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani in Washington, D.C., stating, “We’ll work something out,” while emphasizing his desire for the city to succeed.

Trump previously criticized Mamdani’s campaign for mayor, labeling him a “communist” and endorsing former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the final days of the race. He warned that any Jewish person voting for Mamdani would be “a stupid person,” asserting, “You must vote for him, and hope he does a fantastic job. He is capable of it, Mamdani is not!”

Mamdani’s victory has created tension between the Big Apple and the White House, as he vowed to counter Trump’s immigration agenda at every turn. Trump threatened to cut federal funding if Mamdani does not cooperate.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt stated no date for a meeting has been established, with Trump previously declaring, “It is my obligation to run the Nation, and it is my strong conviction that New York City will be a Complete and Total Economic and Social Disaster should Mamdani win.”

Mamdani confirmed he reached out to Trump for a meeting, stating, “My team reached out to the White House to fulfill a commitment I made to New Yorkers over the course of this campaign, a commitment that showed a willingness to meet with anyone and everyone, so long as it was to the benefit of the eight and a half million people that call the city their home.”

Trump opened the door for the meeting after months of deriding Mamdani as “my little communist” and predicting the ruin of his native New York City if the democratic socialist was elected mayor. Trump also threatened to pull government funding from the city and explore the possibility of a federal takeover.

On Sunday, before flying back to Washington after a weekend at his Mar-a-Lago resort, Trump acknowledged the possibility of a sitdown.
