WASHINGTON – An Afghan national has been implicated as the suspected shooter who attacked two members of the United States National Guard in a Washington, D.C., incident this week. The attack occurred just one block from the White House.
President Trump immediately seized upon the situation, framing it within his broader narrative on border security and immigration controls. He addressed the pertinent issues stemming from the attack, notably the policies that may allow dangerous individuals entry into the United States. According to reports following the incident:
“Trump put them in harm’s way,” declared Keith Olbermann of MSNBC.
The shooting took place shortly before 3 p.m., leaving both guardsmen critically injured by Wednesday evening. The deployment of these National Guard units is part of a surge ordered by Trump in August, aimed specifically at addressing rising crime rates within the nation’s capital following several notable incidents, including the fatal shooting of a congressional intern.
Critics had long opposed this deployment, citing concerns about presidential overreach regarding domestic law enforcement resources that were intended for border security. Following Wednesday’s attack, however, many individuals who previously voiced opposition found themselves revising their stance:
“I wish more had heeded those warnings, especially after today’s tragedy,” stated Senator Mike Lee.
