U.S. Immigration Agency Announces Rigorous Review of Green Cards Issued to Nationals from 19 Designated Countries

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced today that it will reexamine green cards issued to individuals originating from 19 specific countries deemed “of concern.” The directive follows the tragic shooting in Washington, D.C., involving an Afghan national.

USCIS head Joseph Edlow stated that President Trump directed him to conduct a comprehensive reassessment of all green card applications from nationals of these high-risk countries. He emphasized ensuring every applicant undergoes thorough vetting and screening as his primary responsibility.

“The updated guidance will allow USCIS officers to more meaningfully assess whether an alien is a threat to public safety and national security,” the agency said in its release, highlighting the consideration of country-specific factors like the ability to issue secure identity documents. This policy aims to strengthen President Trump’s previous proclamation concerning entry restrictions for national security purposes.

Additionally, officials are reviewing all asylum cases approved under prior administrations as part of enhanced security protocols.
