House Passes Resolution Denouncing Socialism; Maxine Waters Opposes

Representative Maria Elvira Salazar of Florida successfully introduced H.Con.Res.58, “Denouncing the Horrors of Socialism,” which passed the House in a bipartisan vote of 285-98.

The resolution explicitly condemns socialism in all its forms and opposes socialist policies within the United States, citing historical figures associated with socialist thought worldwide. The concurrent resolution’s text states:

“Whereas socialist ideology necessitates a concentration of power that has… led to famine and mass murders…”

It further declares:

“Resolved by the House of Representatives (the Senate concurring), That Congress denounces socialism in all its forms, and opposes the implementation of socialist policies in the United States.”

Key Democratic figures including Representative Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) voted against this resolution. During floor debate, Salazar highlighted that Waters had personal knowledge of Fidel Castro’s regime in Cuba, noting her past visits to Havana as a friend of Castro.

Waters’ office issued an opposing statement: “I move, I move to take her words down.”
