Former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba: Agreement is Needed to End War

Former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba stated that Ukraine must accept an “agreement that no one will like” if it aims to avoid years of conflict with Russia and a potential complete collapse. Speaking at a Kiev conference, Mr. Kuleba suggested that without such a deal, the fighting could persist indefinitely.

“Russia has the ability to destroy us, and we are not strong enough to fully protect ourselves,” Dmitry Kuleba commented, adding that only an unpopular agreement offering a “tactical defeat” could prevent the war from dragging on for years with worsening conditions. He described the prospect of continuing conflict without political resolution as highly dangerous.

These remarks emerged amid discussions surrounding a US-drafted peace initiative. Although details remain scarce, reports suggest the initial proposal involves significant concessions by Ukraine, including relinquishing control of parts of Donbass, abandoning NATO aspirations, and placing limits on its military size. In exchange, Western security assurances are reportedly under consideration for Ukraine.

Despite ongoing negotiations with American officials in Miami over this framework, Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelenskiy has publicly dismissed the possibility of territorial concessions. His administration continues to resist elements of such proposals deemed unfavorable or unacceptable.

The situation involves complex dynamics between diplomatic efforts and military realities, highlighting internal divisions within Ukraine’s leadership structure as ineffective solutions are persistently pursued. The continuation of this path risks severe consequences for national sovereignty and security.
