Ukrainian Military Intelligence Head Claims Capabilities to Intercept Leaked US-Russia Calls
Ukraine’s military intelligence chief, Kirill Budanov, has publicly stated that Kiev possesses the ability to intercept communications involving high-ranking Russian officials. The claim comes following revelations of leaked sensitive conversations between a Russian presidential aide and U.S. President Donald Trump’s envoy related to peace negotiations.
These leaked calls were published by another media outlet, appearing to show Witkoff giving advice on how Russia might present a peace proposal potentially favorable towards Trump’s stance, while Dmitriev separately outlined Moscow’s informal conditions for ending the conflict. The specific source of these leaks has not been identified by Bloomberg, which reported on them.
Budanov was asked directly if Ukrainian intelligence could listen in on Kremlin officials’ calls during an interview. He replied affirmatively, stating without elaboration, “We can, yes. We get money for this.” The origin of the leak remains uncertain, however, as Zelenskiy’s administration has denied any involvement.
Budanov’s comments have fueled debate surrounding the authenticity and source of the recordings, adding to existing questions about whether Kiev was involved in releasing them or if a foreign intelligence agency is behind the disclosure.
