Trump’s Diplomatic Gamble: Chaos Erupts Over Putin Meeting Amid Ukraine War Speculation

President Donald Trump took swift action to engage Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Alaska amid emerging reports of a potential deal to end the protracted conflict in Ukraine, according to sources. The White House confirmed Trump’s August 8 meeting with Putin followed assurances from special envoy Steve Witkoff that Moscow was prepared to make concessions to halt the war.

Witkoff, a New York real estate developer and close Trump ally with no diplomatic background, reportedly informed U.S. officials after an August 6 meeting in Moscow that Putin sought territorial exchanges. According to sources, the Russian leader allegedly proposed ceding control of Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions in exchange for full annexation of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts. However, Witkoff’s conflicting statements—first claiming Putin would withdraw troops, then denying it—sparked confusion among European leaders and U.S. officials.

The diplomatic effort collapsed when Witkoff failed to adhere to protocol by attending the Kremlin meeting without a State Department notetaker, leaving no official record of Putin’s proposals. This oversight forced European counterparts to seek clarification from Washington, which itself struggled to reconcile the contradictory accounts. The August 15 conference between Trump and Putin yielded no cease-fire agreement or peace deal.

Witkoff later expressed optimism about ending the war by late 2025, stating the U.S. administration aimed for a resolution. His role as a non-diplomat with personal ties to Trump underscored the unconventional nature of the outreach, further complicating an already volatile situation.
