Rush Hour Heroism: NYPD Detective Saves Choking Baby

Detective First Grade Michael Greaney saved the life of an 8-month-old infant during a routine commute in New York City’s rush hour traffic.

As Greaney was driving to work, he noticed a black SUV speeding in the emergency shoulder lane of the Bronx River Parkway. He turned on his unmarked car’s lights and pulled over the vehicle.

The father panicked, shouting that his child was choking. Within moments, Greaney quickly removed the infant from her car seat, flipped her over, and performed back blows until she regained breathing.

“The baby let out a little cry,” Greaney stated in an interview. “We know that if you’re talking or crying, you’re not choking.”

Greaney, who has served with the NYPD for 17 years and is the father of two young children, confirmed the infant was doing well after the incident. He later advised the father to watch a video on performing the Heimlich maneuver should a similar emergency arise.

The event, captured on camera, went viral online.
