Son Accused of Stabbing Grammy-Nominated Opera Star in Santa Monica

A son accused of fatally stabbing his Grammy-nominated father, Jubilant Sykes, 71, at their Santa Monica home has reportedly exhibited distressing behavior during court proceedings as new details emerged into the alleged killer’s history of mental illness.

Micah Sykes, 31, made his first appearance in front of a judge Thursday after allegedly murdering his father on Monday night. During the hearing, Micah interrupted proceedings when ordered by the judge to avoid contact with his mother, Cecelia Sykes. The son reportedly stated: “I don’t see my mother here… this person is not telling the truth whatsoever.”

Cecelia, who goes by Cece, witnessed her son allegedly killing her husband. Judge Theresa McGonigle issued a protective order Thursday barring Micah from contacting his mother.

It was revealed that Micah has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and was supposed to be “medicated” at the time of the murder. It remains unclear whether he was under-medicated or failing to take his prescribed dosage.

Police responded to a 911 call from Cecelia, who found her husband mortally wounded on the floor after the attack.
