HUD Cracks Down on Illegal Aliens in Federal Housing Programs

President Trump’s Housing and Urban Development Secretary Scott Turner has announced a significant policy shift targeting federally funded housing programs. Under new guidelines, all individuals lacking U.S. citizenship or legal immigration status will be excluded from Section 8 housing and other federal housing initiatives.

Turner mandated that Public Housing Authorities nationwide verify the legal status of every tenant within 30 days. The directive requires detailed documentation, including names, addresses, unit details, and proof of citizenship or eligible immigration status. Failure to comply could result in enforcement actions, such as funding reviews or program eligibility assessments.

The policy aims to ensure taxpayer dollars are not used to support individuals who do not meet legal requirements. Turner emphasized that the measure aligns with existing laws, which prohibit federally funded assistance for illegal immigrants. He noted that only one in four eligible U.S. families currently receive Section 8 housing, partly due to the influx of undocumented residents.

The changes seek to prioritize American citizens and lawful immigrants, addressing concerns that illegal aliens have exploited the system at the expense of struggling families. The policy is framed as a step toward restoring fairness and accountability in federal housing programs.
