A manager at Nakomis Day Care Center in Minneapolis reported that documents, including children’s enrollment records and checkbooks, were stolen during an alleged break-in on Tuesday. According to Nasrulah Mohamed, the center’s 20-year-old manager, a suspect entered through the kitchen at the rear of the facility, damaging a wall and breaking into the office.
However, Minneapolis Police Department officials stated that no loss was reported to officers. The police report noted that the center later provided additional information but an updated report was not immediately available.
The state Department of Human Services website indicates that Nakomis Day Care Center is operating in good standing and is licensed to care for up to 71 children.
Mohamed described the incident as causing “immense fear” within the community, particularly amid growing scrutiny on Somali-run daycare facilities following allegations of misappropriating state funds. He stated: “We’re honest; We don’t do any fraud or nothing.”
This incident follows a viral video by Nick Shirley that alleged dozens of Somali-operated daycares in Minneapolis have misappropriated millions in state funding.
