ICE Operations in Maine: Golden Backs ICE as Democrats Deepen DHS Funding Rift

Rep. Jared Golden (D-ME) has publicly endorsed Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations within Maine, emphasizing federal law enforcement’s role in public safety and immigration compliance. In a statement, Golden asserted that targeted actions against individuals engaged in criminal activity serve the public interest while stressing that law enforcement must adhere to due process and prioritize community trust.

Golden, representing a rural-leaning congressional district that he won by less than one percentage point over Vice President Kamala Harris in 2024, has faced criticism from progressive Democrats for his stance on ICE. Commentator Wajahat Ali recently labeled Golden “a feckless coward” online, highlighting escalating tensions within the party.

The state’s 2nd District, which includes urban centers like Bangor and Lewiston, has historically leaned conservative despite Maine backing Harris by seven points statewide in the 2024 election. Golden was among just seven Democrats to support a $64 billion Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding bill on the House floor, arguing that blocking it would jeopardize emergency services including FEMA and Coast Guard operations.

In contrast, Rep. Chellie Pingree (D-1st District), who serves on the House Appropriations Committee, has accused ICE activities in Maine of “terrorizing” residents and called for Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s removal.

“Failure to fund DHS would undermine public safety and emergency response services,” Golden stated. “By engaging in the process rather than blocking it, we secured funding for body cameras and de-escalation training — two proven tactics embraced by law enforcement agencies across the country — that I believe will support responsible law enforcement.”
