A federal court has recorded that Panos Anastasiou, a 77-year-old man from Alaska, will plead guilty to felony charges for sending more than 500 threatening messages between 2023 and 2024 targeting six U.S. Supreme Court justices.
The communications included violent, racist, homophobic language, and explicit threats of assassination, torture, hanging, and firearm use. The messages also addressed two family members of the justices.
Anastasiou will also face charges for unlawfully possessing a firearm as a felon stemming from a prior 1991 conviction.
Federal prosecutors have recommended probation and home confinement for Anastasiou due to his advanced age and health conditions, which include dementia and a history of throat cancer.
The plea agreement cites a message sent on July 5, 2024, that used a racist slur against Justice Clarence Thomas and called for the assassination of Thomas, Chief Justice John Roberts, and Justice Samuel Alito. In that message, Anastasiou wrote: “Every American should volunteer to ASSASSINATE not just Trump but the 6 corrupt unelected scumbags and whoever stands in the way.”
The message was sent days after the Supreme Court’s 6-3 conservative majority handed down a landmark ruling on July 1, 2024, granting President Donald Trump — then campaigning for a return to the White House — substantial criminal immunity for actions taken during his presidency.
