Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has shared an image on social media that appeared to depict her in scanty underclothes, but she clarified it was a deepfake created by opponents.
In a statement posted on X, Meloni wrote: “Several fake photos of me — generated using artificial intelligence and passed off as real by some overzealous opponent — are currently circulating. I must admit that whoever created them, at least in the attached case, has also improved me quite a bit.”
She warned that deepfakes pose significant risks: they can “deceive, manipulate, and target anyone.” Meloni added: “I am able to defend myself. Many others cannot.”
This incident follows February’s appearance of a cherub resembling Meloni in a Roman church, which she previously dismissed with the comment: “No, I definitely don’t look like an angel.”
