House GOP Proposes Constitutional Amendment to Require Natural-Born Citizenship for Congress

Rep. Nancy Mace has introduced a joint resolution that would require members of Congress, federal judges, and Senate-confirmed officers to be natural-born citizens under a proposed constitutional amendment.

The resolution specifically targets representatives Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), Shri Thanedar (MI-13), and Pramila Jayapal (WA-07) as examples of foreign-born officials who have not demonstrated loyalty to America. Mace stated, “For too long we have allowed foreign-born members to hold seats in this government while making clear they are America last, not America first.”

According to the House Clerk’s records, 26 U.S. Representatives and six senators were born outside the United States. Notable examples include:
