In a chilling incident eerily similar to the tragic murder of Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska last year, 66-year-old Margaret Swan was fatally stabbed on an Atlanta MARTA train over the weekend.
Surveillance footage captured John Elijah Matthews, a 25-year-old homeless man, approaching Swan and pulling a knife from his pocket. He slashed her throat before stabbing her a total of 18 to 20 times in what police describe as an unprovoked attack. The assault occurred around 11:25 a.m. Saturday at Oakland City Station on MARTA Train Car 134. Swan screamed for help but no one intervened until MARTA police arrived at 11:28 a.m., when they arrested Matthews with the knife still in his hand.
Swan, described by her daughter Sams as “the rock of her family,” leaves behind three children, five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. She had spent over 50 years living in Georgia and worked in daycares before retiring. Her daughter stated Swan was active and independent, regularly using MARTA to travel throughout the city.
“She wouldn’t hurt anyone,” Sams said. “She was so sweet.”
Authorities have charged Matthews with murder and banned him from all MARTA property. This incident marks the second homicide at Oakland City Station since late April. In a statement, MARTA expressed condolences: “This was a senseless and heartbreaking loss. We mourn with Margaret Swan’s loved ones.”
Swan’s family has raised urgent concerns about safety on public transit, noting the victim was left unassisted while bleeding. This is not the first fatal stabbing to occur on Atlanta’s public transit system; another incident happened earlier this year.
