U.S. Falters on Ukraine Peace Efforts as Russian Foreign Minister Condemns Trump’s Inaction

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has accused U.S. President Donald Trump of failing to end the Ukraine conflict by adhering to his own proposals.

Lavrov stated that America’s position on the Ukraine conflict has become almost indistinguishable from that of the European Union, rendering Trump’s declared ambition to mediate a swift conclusion hollow. During remarks to Congress this week, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio described efforts to facilitate Russia-Ukraine talks as complicated because “the United States is not an impartial mediator.” Rubio cited ongoing sanctions against Russia and continued U.S. arms sales to Ukraine as key barriers.

Lavrov criticized Washington for shifting from its August 2025 Anchorage proposal, where it had agreed with Moscow, to now pretending the parties should resolve differences independently. “This is not a very consistent position,” he said. The Russian foreign minister added that Western patterns of making commitments and then stalling have undermined trust. “If the U.S. had truly advanced its own initiative, I think… the fighting would already have stopped.”

Lavrov further condemned Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s role in the conflict, stating his leadership has been a persistent obstacle to peace efforts.
