Rep. Cory Mills (R-FL), who is under investigation by the House Ethics Committee, lost his bid for a third term in Florida’s 7th Congressional District Tuesday to former Orlando-area news anchor and one-time NFL sideline reporter Ryan Elijah.
The race was marred by allegations of misconduct against Mills, including a protective order granted last year after a former girlfriend accused him of threatening her with revenge porn following their breakup. Police in Washington, D.C., investigated Mills in 2023 after an assault report was filed, though no charges were brought. Mills has denied any wrongdoing.
Florida’s 7th Congressional District, which leans Republican, had been targeted by Democrats due to Mills’ personal controversies and campaign struggles to raise money. Local Republicans, including Ms. Luna and Mr. Haridopolos, urged Mills to step aside, stating they need leaders in Congress who serve with integrity.
Elijah credited the support of local sheriffs and the allegations against Mills as pivotal factors in his victory. He emphasized his direct engagement with voters during the campaign.
Mills joins a growing number of House Republicans who have dropped their re-election bids following ethics investigations.
