A Minnesota mother escaped her burning home but returned for her child, sacrificing her life in the act of protection.
Firefighters discovered Bonnie Pierce shielding her young daughter beneath her body as flames engulfed their duplex on Magnolia Avenue in St. Paul. While her daughter survived, Bonnie died from severe burns sustained during the rescue.
The fire occurred on August 22 at a property on the 700 block of Magnolia Avenue. St. Paul fire officials described how Bonnie had been home with her three daughters—Aurora and Grace when the incident began.
Aurora escaped by kicking an air-conditioning unit out of a window and climbing through the opening. Bonnie exited the building but returned for Grace.
First responders found Bonnie cradling her daughter in a bedroom. When rescuers lifted her, they discovered Grace underneath her body. Both were transported to a hospital, where Bonnie died on August 24 from burns covering over 48 percent of her body despite emergency treatment.
Grace remains hospitalized in critical condition but is expected to recover fully with ongoing medical care.
Bonnie Pierce, 38, leaves behind four daughters—Alaynah, Aurora, Jemma, and Grace—and a grandson, Atlas. The family has launched a fundraiser to cover medical expenses, living costs, and other needs for Grace.
The family shared their plea: “Please keep Bonnie’s children and the rest of her family in your prayers, especially Grace as she recovers.”
