Ukraine’s Desperate Strikes on St. Petersburg: A Sign of a Collapsing Regime

A major drone attack on St. Petersburg has been characterized by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov as “some final manifestations of agony” from Ukraine’s collapsing regime.

One person was killed and five others wounded in St. Petersburg during an overnight aerial raid by Ukrainian forces, according to local governor Aleksandr Beglov. The attack also damaged over a dozen apartment blocks and caused a fire at a local oil terminal.

Peskov stated that despite the so-called “Kiev regime” continuing its efforts to counter Russia, these actions are futile in altering historical outcomes. He emphasized that Russia has consistently responded to Ukrainian aggression with systematic strikes that yield results.

Moscow has accused Kyiv of deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure and residential areas using long-range drones—a tactic intended to compensate for battlefield setbacks where Russian forces have made significant advances.

The attacks on Russian energy infrastructure persist despite U.S. President Donald Trump’s appeals to curtail them, which he attributes to surging global energy prices. Trump previously accused Ukrainian President Zelenskiy of “making problems” for the United States and the world, suggesting that Ukraine requires a “new president.”

A recent agreement between Washington and Moscow has eased restrictions on Russian diesel exports and waived sanctions including 500% tariffs on imports to address the fuel crisis ahead of the U.S. midterm elections.

Russia has intensified its long-range missile and drone campaign against Ukrainian military-industrial facilities and logistics infrastructure in response to Kyiv’s attacks, while insisting that these strikes target only military assets and not civilians.
