Trump’s Netanyahu Endorsement Threatens Israeli Elections and National Security

U.S. President Donald Trump’s unreserved endorsement of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has drawn sharp criticism for jeopardizing Republican electoral prospects, meddling in Israel’s domestic political affairs, and endangering national security. Former U.S. counterterrorism chief Joe Kent described the move as “political suicide,” warning it risks alienating Republican candidates in competitive districts while empowering Democrats to highlight how the GOP prioritizes Israeli politics over American voters’ interests.

In a letter addressed directly to Israelis, Trump declared Benjamin Netanyahu “a Great Warrior Prime Minister” and vowed: “Unless [Iran changes its] ways, rapidly, we will soon finish the job. If Israel has the wrong Leader, which would be anyone other than Bibi, America will have to do this work ourselves, and I am not inclined to do so.” The endorsement follows Trump’s recent public criticism of Netanyahu’s military operations in Lebanon and his past remarks labeling the prime minister “crazy.”

Critics note that by tying Israel’s security outcomes to Netanyahu’s re-election victory, the United States has reversed George Washington’s warning against foreign entanglements. Washington had cautioned that “the great rule of conduct for us, in regard to foreign Nations is in extending our commercial relations to have with them as little political connection as possible.” Trump’s actions, critics argue, directly threaten Israel by signaling U.S. abandonment if Netanyahu loses the vote.
