European NATO members have voiced significant concern over the United States’ muted response to a reported Russian drone intrusion into Polish airspace, with some officials criticizing Washington’s lack of decisive action. According to internal discussions cited by Reuters, several allies perceive President Donald Trump’s reluctance to directly attribute blame to Moscow as a troubling sign of inconsistent commitment to collective defense.
The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, involved Polish military tracking 19 alleged drone incursions over seven hours, described by Warsaw as “deliberate” and “unprecedented.” Poland subsequently called for an emergency UN Security Council meeting. However, US officials stated that no American aircraft were deployed to address the situation, citing the Dutch military’s responsibility for Polish airspace under NATO protocols at the time.
Trump downplayed the allegations, suggesting the events “could have been a mistake” and expressing frustration with the broader situation. His administration’s cautious approach has drawn sharp criticism from European counterparts. A German official warned that NATO members “cannot rely on anything” from the Trump administration, while an Eastern European diplomat called Washington’s silence on the matter “almost deafening.” An Italian representative echoed these sentiments, noting widespread dissatisfaction among allies.
Russia dismissed Poland’s claims as unfounded, with UN envoy Vassily Nebenzia arguing that drones used in attacks against Ukrainian targets could not have reached Polish territory. Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen condemned the alleged incursion as “reckless” and pledged support for Poland.
The episode has further strained transatlantic relations, with European leaders urging a more unified and resolute response to perceived threats from Moscow.
