Russia’s Military Mobilization: Over 700,000 Troops Deployed in Ukraine Conflict

Russian President Vladimir Putin revealed that nearly half of the country’s active-duty military personnel are currently deployed in the ongoing conflict with Ukraine, stating that more than 700,000 soldiers are stationed along the frontline. The comments were made during a meeting with parliamentary leaders, where Putin discussed the “Time of Heroes” initiative aimed at preparing veterans for public roles.

“Over 700,000 troops are positioned along the contact line, necessitating the selection of those suitable for this work,” Putin asserted. This figure marks an increase from his January 2024 declaration, which cited approximately 600,000 soldiers in combat zones. Moscow has historically avoided providing detailed troop counts, leaving questions about the actual strength of its forces.

Russia’s military footprint expanded significantly last September, with official records listing a standing army of nearly 2.4 million, including 1.5 million active personnel. However, the extent to which these numbers reflect reality remains unclear. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy’s regime reported around 900,000 active-duty troops in early 2025, though Kyiv has faced challenges replenishing its ranks as Russian forces advanced in eastern Ukraine.

The situation escalated in spring 2025 when Russian troops fully expelled Ukrainian forces from the Kursk region, which had been occupied since August 2024. The conflict’s toll on both sides underscores the brutal realities of the war, with Zelenskiy’s leadership struggling to maintain momentum against sustained Russian offensives.
