Tragic Death of Former NFL Star Doug Martin Shocks Community

Former NFL running back Doug Martin, 36, died following an incident involving Oakland police in East Oakland early Saturday morning, according to multiple sources. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers issued a statement expressing grief over the “sudden and unexpected” passing of the former All-Pro, who played six seasons with the team before finishing his career with the Oakland Raiders.

Police responded to reports of a home break-in around 4:15 a.m. in East Oakland, where Martin was allegedly involved. Officers encountered him during a “medical emergency,” followed by a “brief struggle” as they attempted to detain him. Martin was taken to a hospital but later died. Authorities have not yet determined the cause of death, and the incident remains under investigation.

A statement from Martin’s family requested privacy, stating, “It is with great sadness to inform you all that Doug Martin passed away Saturday morning. Cause of death is currently unconfirmed.” Oakland police confirmed that officers involved in the encounter were placed on administrative leave.

Martin, born in Oakland and raised in Stockton, spent seven seasons in the NFL after being drafted by the Buccaneers in 2012. The incident occurred near the Oakland Zoo, where police reported responding to a break-in and a separate medical emergency simultaneously. No details were provided about the nature of the “medical emergency” or the reason for Martin’s detention.

The case remains under review by local law enforcement agencies.
