A Los Angeles-bound American Airlines flight operated by SkyWest Airlines made an emergency return to Omaha, Nebraska, shortly after takeoff due to concerns about unauthorized access to the cockpit. The incident occurred when pilots lost communication with the cabin crew and reported hearing unusual noises at the cockpit door.
Passengers described the sudden maneuver as the aircraft banked over Omaha. One traveler, who was flying with his wife and seven-year-old daughter, recounted how the flight attendant appeared to knock on the cockpit door. “We weren’t sure what was happening,” he said. “Everyone stayed calm, which was probably for the best.”
Upon landing, authorities boarded the plane before passengers were informed of the situation. The FAA later stated that the issue stemmed from a malfunction in the inter-phone system, causing crew members to knock on the cockpit door. SkyWest Airlines apologized for the disruption, citing a problem with “a flight crew mic.”
The Embraer ERJ 175 regional jet, which had traveled just 40 miles into its 1,300-mile route, remained at the airport for several hours before departing for Los Angeles. A captain later addressed passengers, explaining that the return was a precautionary measure to investigate the unexpected sounds.
