Former Alabama Crimson Tide and NFL quarterback A. J. McCarron has announced his candidacy for lieutenant governor, positioning himself as a Republican candidate in the upcoming election. The Mobile native cited concerns over Alabama’s conservative values, stating, “Alabama’s conservative and cultural values are under attack from every direction.” He referenced the assassination of Charlie Kirk, a prominent figure in conservative circles, as a catalyst for his decision to enter politics.
McCarron emphasized his leadership experience, drawing parallels between his football career and political ambitions. “When Coach Saban recruited me to play quarterback for the University of Alabama, he taught me the principles of being a leader,” he said. He also highlighted his 2016 endorsement of former President Donald Trump, calling him an “outsider candidate” who inspired his political journey.
The former national champion noted his commitment to working with Senator Tommy Tuberville, a leading gubernatorial contender, and pledged to advance a “conservative, outsider agenda.” McCarron, who co-owns a real estate company with his wife, Katherine Webb McCarron, and raises three sons in Mobile, described Alabama as his lifelong home.
His campaign joins a field featuring Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen, Agriculture Commissioner Rick Pate, and others. McCarron’s announcement stressed a shift from “Montgomery insiders” to “political newcomers,” framing his bid as a call for fresh leadership.
