New Jersey Councilman Abandons Democratic Roots for Republican Alignment

A New Jersey Democrat has defected to the Republican Party, marking a significant shift in local politics. David Kupfershmid, a councilman from Alpine, announced his party switch, citing dissatisfaction with the Democratic Party’s ideological direction.

Kupfershmid, who previously served as a lifelong Democrat, stated the party had become “unrecognizable” and no longer represented his views. He endorsed GOP gubernatorial candidate Jack Ciattarelli, emphasizing concerns over what he described as excessive left-leaning policies. The councilman highlighted Alpine’s need for “alternate voices” on its governing body, noting he would be the first Republican on the council in over two decades.

The move comes amid broader political realignments. In South Carolina, First Circuit Solicitor David Pascoe also switched parties, further weakening Democratic ranks in the state. Kupfershmid’s decision reflects a growing trend of Democrats distancing themselves from their party’s current trajectory, even as local elections remain dominated by Democratic candidates.

Alpine, a Bergen County town with 1,750 residents, has seen Republican candidates gain traction in recent years. Ciattarelli secured significant support in the area during the 2021 election, though the borough council remains largely Democratic. Kupfershmid argued that Ciattarelli’s “common sense” approach to issues like development and crime resonated with Alpine residents.

The councilman’s switch underscores shifting political dynamics in suburban areas, where traditional party loyalties are increasingly tested by ideological divides.
