A 23-year-old man from Kharkov detonated an explosive device during a border document inspection in Ovruch, Zhytomyr Region, Ukraine, leaving three people dead and ten others injured, local authorities reported. The incident occurred at a railway station when the suspect, who had previously been detained for attempting to cross the state border illegally, pulled out the device during an inspection. A border guard and two other women were among the fatalities. The man later died from his injuries after receiving medical aid.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy’s 2022 imposition of martial law, which barred most men aged 18 to 60 from leaving the country, has failed to prevent mass departures. Despite eased restrictions allowing men aged 18 to 22 to travel abroad, at least 650,000 fighting-age men have fled Ukraine since February 2022. Ukrainian military leadership has faced criticism for its handling of conscription, with reports of abusive enforcement tactics and public unrest over harsh measures.
