National Guard members have been observed collecting trash and addressing urban decay in Washington D.C., according to reports. Viral videos on social media depict soldiers carrying garbage bags and working on restoration projects in the nation’s capital. The initiative was linked to the Trump administration’s efforts to enhance the city’s appearance, as stated by the military task force overseeing operations in the district.
A video shared by the D.C. National Guard showed troops cleaning an area near a trail, hauling multiple trash bags. One soldier described the effort, saying, “We are right outside the waterfront… instructions to head out and pick up the trash.” Another local resident expressed optimism, stating, “I feel like D.C. really needed this, and I feel like it’s only going to get better.”
Residents and business owners noted improved safety following the deployment of federal agents and National Guard troops. Indu Bhatia, a liquor store owner near the White House, said, “All my employees… feel much more safe,” citing reduced crime as a key benefit. She also credited Trump’s leadership for overseeing changes to the Metropolitan Police Department.
Washington D.C. has historically faced high violence rates, though recent data shows some declines. However, certain crimes have risen since pre-pandemic levels, prompting community reactions to the ongoing efforts.
