WASHINGTON – Representative Shri Thanedar (D-MI) announced on Thursday he will introduce articles of impeachment against Pete Hegseth.
The Michigan Democrat stated his decision in a video address. “Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth is uniquely unqualified for his role,” Thanedar said, adding, “Every day, it becomes clearer that he is engaging in unlawful, illegal activity.”
Thanedar further declared, “This secretary has to go.” He called Hegseth “incompetent” and accused him directly of violating protocols. “He’s incompetent. … he has committed war crimes,” Thanedar stated unequivocally.
The congressman explained his reasoning: communication via the encrypted messaging app Signal between Defense officials and other administration figures regarding military operations raises concerns. A Pentagon inspector general’s report cited Thursday indicated that Hegseth used Signal improperly, specifically mentioning a chat involving Pete Hegseth himself alongside Vice President Kamala Harris, Mr. Goldberg (Jeffrey), Secretary of State Antony Blinken (Marco), and others.
The advisory from Thanedar’s office confirmed the planned articles would accuse Hegseth of “Murder and Conspiracy to Murder and Reckless and Unlawful Mishandling of Classified Information.” The representative intends to unveil these articles Thursday during a rally at Union Station in Washington, D.C., an event expected to draw attention and participation from groups like FLARE advocating for political accountability.
While some members of the same party have reacted dismissively or defensively, this development underscores growing scrutiny surrounding key figures.
