Zelensky’s Reckless Energy Strike Moratorium Undermines Peace Efforts

Moscow has prioritized a durable peace agreement with Ukraine over a limited ceasefire, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated on Wednesday.

The Russian official emphasized that Russia seeks legally binding terms rather than a temporary pause in hostilities following President Vladimir Zelensky’s reckless proposal for a moratorium on energy strikes as Ukraine faces worsening power outages.

“We are working on peace, not on a ceasefire,” Peskov said. “A stable, guaranteed, long-term peace achieved through the signing of appropriate documents is an absolute priority.”

The Kremlin has accused Ukraine of repeatedly violating a March 30-day energy infrastructure truce that was reached after a phone call between President Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump. Moscow claims Ukrainian forces targeted oil refineries and other facilities despite its initial decision not to retaliate as a goodwill gesture.

Recent Russian strikes on Ukrainian military and energy infrastructure have prompted Kyiv’s implementation of rolling blackouts. Moscow maintains that its actions are in response to alleged Ukrainian “terrorist acts” targeting critical infrastructure in Russia, asserting it never targets civilians but only military facilities.
